Expect The Unexpected and has retained top spot at the Stupid Fucking Sayings Awards 2018, yet again beating off strong competition from It’s Always In The Last Place You Look and Irish colloquial term For The Day That’s In It.
The saying, which has won the competition every year since its inception, has continued to prove itself completely meaningless despite its large fanbase of mostly people who also use phrases such as Always Stay One Step Ahead and Sleep With One Eye Open.
Martha Cavendish, who organises the Stupid Fucking Sayings Awards, says she doesn’t expect the saying to ever stop winning the competition, something she loves telling supporters of the phrase as they fall over themselves shouting it back at her.

Martha said: “Well it’s just such a stupid saying isn’t it. I mean if you did expect the unexpected then you would have expected it and it wouldn’t be unexpected anymore. The saying should just be ‘Expect’. I think that what people really find stupid about this saying is that it thinks its being clever when really it’s just so fucking pointless.
“If you look at It’s Always In The Last Place You Look, which takes second spot nearly every year, then you can see how obviously stupid it is. That phrase leaves its stupidity out there front and center for all to see. But Expect The Unexpected tries to camouflage just how pointless a saying it is and I think that’s why people really detest it.”
Martha did however say she was surprised by third place at this year’s awards, with Irish saying For The Day That’s In It picking up the last podium place.
“To be honest I don’t know what it means,” said the organiser, “I mean a few people have tried to explain it to me and I just don’t get it. Apparently people will say, ‘so did you enjoy, say, the wedding?’ and people will reply, ‘Aye, for the day that was in it’. I don’t know what that means. I mean surely the day that was in it is just the day? No? What day was in it? I don’t know. Anyway it came third
